Time for Another Cold Shoot

It is time once again to break out the old Mosin and see what she can do.  Add a couple more years to that already aging rifle and see what has made it through history and still capable of sending rounds down range.  Plan on joining us for the Fall 2016 Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge.

Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge
November 12th 1:00 pm
Wahsatch Shooters Association Range in Kaysville, UT
Fee: $17 (non-members)  $7 (members of the range)

The challenge will once again test your skills against others with the historic Russian rifle.  This is a 4 stage match where we will shoot standing at 50 yards, timed at 75 yards, and bench rest at 100 yards.  Each stage is scored and top score will get bragging rights as UMNC winner.

The rifle will be a non-modified Mosin Nagant shooting the 7.62 x 54r cartridge.  91/30's, M44's, M38's, etc.  All rifles will be using open sights for the challenge.

This competition is designed to have some inexpensive competitive fun with a fairly even playing field.  Its a way to enjoy some competition without spending a lot of money for accuracy.

Email with any questions.  utahmncompetition@gmail.com

Hope to see you there.

May 7th 2016 - The Next Challenge is On

Clear the rust out of the barrel.  It is time again to see how good that cheap, mass produced old rifle can shoot.  Hopefully this entry will help answer questions you may have regarding the Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge.

Saturday May 7th - 1:00 pm
Wahsatch Shooters Association Range in Kaysville, UT
Fee:  Members of the range - $8, non-members $18
Registration:  Please sign up by emailing me at utahmncompetition@gmail.com

The Rifle - The original rifle in this challenge is the 91/30.  The kind you used to be able to pick up for under $100 covered in cosmoline.  This is an open sight event, no scopes.  No modifications should be made to the rifle to keep everyone on an similar playing field.  Knowing how the rifle shoots is the key.  Exceptions are made for a recoil pad and if you want to paint the thing pink that will be allowed.  However, no trigger jobs, fancy stocks, etc.  In the last couple of events we have started to allow the carbines like the M44, M38, etc. with the same restrictions.  You can shoot with or without bayonet, sling, or while wearing an official Russian military uniform.  Part of the fun is to have a competition using a really cheap old gun out of the box, or rather, out of the crate.

The Ammo - The Mosin shoots the 7.62 x 54r.  You may shoot, like most of us do, the surplus ammo freshly rusted out of the spam can.  Or you can use your fancy store bought stuff that looks the same but just isn't as corrosive.  Where's the fun in that?  Hand loads?  Sure.  If you got the time.

The Challenge - The competition consists of 4 main stages and there usually are some side challenges along the way.  The main stages are always subject to some slight variances to keep things interesting but will follow these basics.

  1. The first stage is taken standing at 50 yards.  Right handed, left handed, one handed, who knows.
  2. The second stage is at 75 yards and is a timed event.  50 seconds? 40 seconds? 36.5 seconds? How many shots can you get off with accuracy?  This will be bench rest.
  3. The third stage is also bench rest, no time limit, at 100 yards.  Accuracy, or in this case, knowing where your rifle wants to shoot at 100 yards is the key to this one.
  4. The last stage is often the make or break.  At about 110 yards you have to have a clean kill of a standard 12 oz soda can.  The fewer shots you take, the more you score.  Its hard to see a soda can at that distance so make sure you are shooting at the right target.
The Target - The first three stages are scored with a ringed target below.  We went with this target due to its visibility at distance.

The Winner - As a participant of this challenge you are playing for the bragging rights of saying you won the Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge.  Yeah, maybe you get a pack of surplus ammo to replace what you shot.  There is usually something, but really its for the fun and for the bragging rights.

The Firing Squad - At the end of each challenge we have made it a tradition to line up the firing squad and execute something like a cuddly teddy bear or the left over jack-o-lantern.

Take a look at the previous blogs and feel free to email an questions you have.  I look forward to having you there.  Please sign up so we know how many to expect and make sure we have enough targets.

Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge VII - November 7th 2015

Welcome to one of the funnest shooting competitions around.  At least the funnest one in Kaysville, UT on the afternoon of the 7th of November.  Below you will find the details on the 7th Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge.

Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge VII
November 7th, 2015
Saturday 1 pm - 4:30 pm
Wahsatch Shooter's Association Range
Register by sending me an email utahmncompetition@gmail.com
Fee - $7 for WSA members, $17 for non members (range fee for entire day)

The competition will begin at 1 pm with a run down of the competition rules and safety guidelines. There will be a warm-up and sight in time before the scoring begins.  The competition will consist of 4 stages using a stock Mosin Nagant shooting the 7.62x54r round.  We have opened this competition due to demand and requests to include 91/30, the M44, and if you got another variant that is bolt action, non-modified stock rifle with iron sights only.  This competition started from a friendly competitive natured event using that famous, cheap, overstocked, sometimes rusty, 91/30 that you could pick up for under $100.  Its great to see what you can do with a 80+ year old rifle and surplus rifle.  Since their seem to be fewer of these rifles available and many variants out there with many people interested, let's see what you have.

Stage 1 - 50 yards standing (its a heavy gun stage)
10 rounds to be taken at 50 yards.  We will be using the target pictured below to score.  Targets will be provided at the competition.
Stage 2 - 75 yards bench rest timed event (fast shooting stage)
10 rounds to be taken from a bench rest.  This will be a timed event and exact rules and time will be presented at the competition.  Being 10 rounds, it will require reloading of some kind.  A well oiled gun will be helpful.

Stage 3 - 100 yards bench rest  (accuracy stage)
10 round for accuracy from the bench, open sights.  No scoping or optics to be used at any time of the competition.  10 rounds on paper are needed to score well on this round.

Stage 4 - >100 yards sniper challenge (kick the can stage)
1 to 5 rounds for this stage.  For this stage the fewer shots you take the more points you score.  We usually use a regular soda can and place it on the back stop at about 110 yards.  Take out the can in 1 shot, a bunch of point.  Take it in 2 shots, a few less points, Don't take it out at all, 0 points.  You get the idea.  This is the stage that can make or break the winner of the competition.

We usually have a few other fun, non-scoring challenges during the event.  The Nagant pistol has quickly become a favorite.  I will usually have a little something for the winner of the side challenges and for with UMNC winner.  Its all about having fun, and we have always been successful at having fun doing this.

Time For Another Challenge

Its been too long.

Its time to throw down.

Are you up for the challenge?

April 11th, 2015 - The Sixth Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge

1:00 p.m. @ The Wahsatch Shooter's Association Range

The Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge will test your skills with this time
tested rifle and its rimmed cartridge.  The format will be very similar to past formats.  A brief explanation below.  But the difference this go around is.....

This will be an "OPEN" match.  This will be open to all non-modified Mosin Nagant variants shooting the 7.62 x 54r.  Previously only 91/30's were allowed.
I've had enough people wanting to participate with their M44 or other version.  The rifle must still be open sights and no modifications to stock, trigger, etc.  So tell all your friends.  There are a lot of these rifles collecting dust in some one's collection just itching to come out and play.  Here's their chance.  Spread the word.

4 Main Stages -
50 Yards Standing
75 Yards Timed event
100 Yards Bench Rest
110-ish yards sniper challenge

There will also be an opportunity to bring your own throw down challenge.  If you have an idea for a competitive challenge we will have a few side challenges on top of the scoring event.  Bring your best "shot."

Sign up by sending me an email at utahmncompetition@gmail.com

Fee - $5 for WSA range member, $15 for non-members. ($10 range fee)  mainly to cover targets and a little something for the winner.

This event is a lot of fun.  Come one, come all.  First time Mosin Nagant shooters are even welcome.  Help Spread the word.

Feel free to contact me with any questions about the competition.  I hope to see you there.

Some apologies are needed for not posting since the last challenge.
Some may say that I was upset for losing in the shoot off and so I refused to post pictures of the winner.  Not so.  Just too dang busy/lazy/sidetracked...ok well a little disappointed.

Congratulations to Andy Jones for winning the UMNC V.  His second win. He even did it while crippled.

The tools - Bring your favorite Mosin Nagant 91/30 stock rifle with no major modifications.  Open sights only.  A recoil pad is allowed.  Surplus ammo, expensive ammo, or reloads, your choice.  Eye and ear protection.

Check in begins at 1:00 and we will run down the rules as soon as we are checked in.  There will be about a 15 minute warm up and then the fun begins.  We will keep it safe and fun.  And who know what kind of rabbit or pumpkin or golf ball or revolver we may pull out of the hat?
