Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge IV Winner is....

Congratulations, Jarom!

Another awesome challenge is in the books.  We have our fourth winner.  No one has been able to repeat yet.  It was very close scoring for the top four and the first time we had a tie in the top three.  I think everyone had a great time.  I love to see so many Mosins being shot at once.

Final Scores

Jarom - 148
Justin - 144
Aaron - 142
Andy - 142
Scott -123
Kim - 123
Rick - 122
Todd - 96
Greg - 92
Bryce - 67.5
Tom - 52
Carol - 35

The competition is getting tighter.  I think we have a good format that is a combination of competitive shooting and fun.  I had a lot of comments about what a great group of people this is to shoot with.  I completely agree.  I was hoping we would get some new participants this year because it is a fun laid back way to have fun shooting.  I wanted to point out that Carol has only shot the Mosin like 3 times before the shoot but I know I saw her smiling more than once.  Please spread the word to anyone you are trying to get into shooting.  If anything, its always fun to "carve" pumpkins together.

Here's where the video of the pumpkins go.  If anyone has a good version they can send me or send me a link it would be appreciated.

During this challenge we issued a side Nagant challenge.  We introduced the Nagant revolver.  Sure, some say that it was just an excuse to buy another gun.  Some say that Russians made clunky weapons.  Well maybe they are right.  But how cool is it to shoot a piece of history?  Very cool.  A very interesting design and concept for sure.  And thank goodness no one was hurt shooting a pistol that is  92 years old.  It looks like Tom has just a little experience on a revolver.  Great shot, Tom.

Thank you all that came and participated.  Again, congratulations to Jarom.  (Did you go buy a Nagant with that Cabela's gift card?)  And congrats to Justin, Aaron and Andy for finishing so close behind.  (Justin, did you wear the tie to church?)  Also, thank you to the range and our range officers for being there, keeping us safe, and letting us spread pumpkin guts all over the range and parking lot.

Let me know if you have any suggestions or comments for the next challenge.  Keep your eyes open for the next challenge date in the spring.

UTAH MOSIN NAGANT CHALLENGE ЧЕТЫРЕ

Utah Mosin Nagant Challange четыре (IV)

Sign ups are now open.  If you are planning on competing in the fourth UMNC please shoot me an email at utahmncompetition@gmail.com.  We welcome all shooters.  First timers to old timers.  Details below.

When:  October 19th 1-5pm
Where:  Kaysville, UT Wahsatch Shooters Association.  click here for directions
Cost:  Range members $8, non-members $18.

What to bring:  Your stock 91/30 Mosin Nagant with no modifications (recoil pad is ok).  Ammo, most of us are shooting the cheap surplus ammo from the spam cans.  Binoculars or spotting scope for warm up round.  Eye and ear protection.

We will be shooting in a couple of groups for each stage so it is possible to share a gun if you want to bring someone who doesn't have their own.  This is a great way to introduce someone to friendly competitive shooting.

Rules:

Their will be 4 stages to the competition.  Each stage is at a different distance and has a different challenge associated with it.  There will be 5 shots per stage.  Here is a basic description of each stage.
Stage 1 - 50 yards standing
Stage 2 - 75 yards timed
Stage 3 - 100 yards accuracy
Stage 4 - approx 110 yards sniper challenge
Stages 1, 2, and 3 will be at paper targets with scoring rings.  Stage 4 will be at another style of target where the fewer shots taken the more points will be scored.

Binoculars and spotting scopes may be used during the warm up round but may not be used during the competition.  Open sights only on your stock Mosin.  No modifications allowed with the exception of a recoil pad and a pink camo paint job.  Adherence to all safety rules and range officer instructions is mandatory.  We are here to have fun.

Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions or take a look at older posts at past events.

Yes, I may need some help carving some pumpkins again.

Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge IV

Are you ready?  Have you cleaned your Mosin since the last shoot?  (I haven't).  If it survived this long it can go a couple of months without a scrub down, right?

Announcing the Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge IV.
When:  Saturday October 19th 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Where:  Wahsatch Shooters Association Range in Kaysville, UT
Why:  Because we can and its a whole lot of fun

More details to follow so keep your eyes on the blog.  If you already plan on attending go ahead and shoot me an email at utahmncompetition@gmail.com

For anyone new, we welcome one and all.  You don't have to be a serious competitive shooter to come have some fun shooting with us.  We shoot the Mosin Nagant 91/30 surplus rifle (you know the one that you used to be able to get for about $100 that is now from $129-$169.  I should have invested in Mosins instead of the stock market.)  Only iron sights are to be used.  You can add a recoil pad if you want but other than that no modifications.  You can use expensive ammo if you think it helps but I think we all have been using the cheap surplus stuff.  We shoot at 50, 75, and 100 yards standing, bench rest, and timed.  You can look at previous blog posts to see some of the past stage details but know that with each Challenge the stages may change up just a little bit to keep things interesting.  The 4th stage is a sniper challenge at over 100 ft.  Plan on 5 shots per stage (or less) plus any warm up ammo and extra for any extra challenges between stages.

This is a lot of fun so spread the word and clear your schedule for a good afternoon of shooting with some friends.

Sign Up Open

Good day all you Mosin Nagant shooters!

Sign up time is here and I hope you all can make it.  Here are the details.

Sign up:  Register by emailing me your name @ utahmncompetition@gmail.com

Fee:  $7 for members of the range, $14 for non-members.  I had targets left over so it might even be less.

When: May 11th, 2013.  We officially have the range from 1:30 to 4:30 but plan on showing up a little early to help with set up and registration if you can.

Where:  Wahsatch Shooters Association range in Kaysville, Utah.  Follow the link for directions.

What to bring:  Your stock Mosin Nagant 91/30 with iron sights, at least 40 rounds of ammo, eyes and ears, a spotting scope or binoculars, some work gloves for moving the target stands.

The competition:  In the past we used from 16-20 rounds.  Standing at 50 yards, bench rest at 75 and 100 yards, timed and not timed.  To keep things interesting there may be a slight change to one of the 4 stages that will include more than the usual 5 shots so bring some extra ammo and make sure your action is running smooth.  Here's a hint - how quickly can you load and reload your rifle with accuracy?

As always you can email me if you have any questions.  I hope you can be there to see if we will have a new Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge champion.  Invite a friend.  If you haven't been to one of these yet, we are here to have a good time shooting so all are welcome.

Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge III

Make some room on your calendar for the 3rd Utah Mosin Nagant Challenge.

May 11th at 1:30 pm.
Wahsatch Shooters Association Range in Kaysville.

More details to come.
Similar to the previous challenges, stock $100 Mosin 91/30, iron sights.

I hope you still have some of that old surplus ammo to shoot up.  Standing, timed, bench rest, and a final sniper challenge will test your skills.  Bring a friend, go buy another Mosin if you need.

Looking forward to another fun challenge.
